Airdropping is the quickest way to distribute tokens to a large number of people.

During the ICO craze in 2017 many blockchain teams did airdrops of their tokens as a way to show appreciation to their existing followers, attract new users to grow their community, and increase the utility of platforms where their tokens could be used by widening the distribution of token holders.

An airdrop is an effective way to incentivize actions within a community such as holding some other token, like a non-fungible governance token, or migrating to a blockchain fork. There is a multiplicity of reasons and ways to do an airdrop; the only real requirement is that you have a collection of people to drop the tokens to.

  • Handshake airdropped tokens to developers who verified their GitHub accounts on the Handshake platform
  • OmiseGO airdropped their tokens to all Ethereum accounts holding a minimum balance of 0.1 Ether

Doing an effective airdrop is nontrivial.

First you need to decide if you want to use a hot, cold, or blind airdrop. A “hot” airdrop is one where you have an established relationship with your recipients so you can directly ask them to send you their Ethereum account addresses. In a “cold” airdrop, the recipients are people who do not already know you or for whom you do not have contact information. A cold airdrop (e.g. Handshake’s) often involves marketing and PR work to reach awareness and convert each recipient. A “blind” airdrop (e.g. OmiseGO’s) distributes tokens to a group of recipients that you do not directly select, so you may never know who they are.

Once you have determined the type of airdrop and the recipients, you can send the tokens. Services like Disperse.app make it easy to send funds in a batch, so rather than paying high gas costs on individual transactions for each recipient, you can send a single transaction that transfers funds to all recipients at once. Disperse supports ERC20s and L1 coins and requires you to input a list of recipient account addresses.

When you want to airdrop NFTs, you use gft.art.

We support gas-efficient batch transfers of ERC721 and ERC1155 tokens including Rarible and Zora tokens.

Today, NFT fans tend to be new to the crypto ecosystem and their ability to transition from fans to collectors is hampered by the need to understand how crypto wallets work. What makes gft.art special is that your recipients don’t need to have an Ethereum account to receive the NFT airdrop. Wait, what?

What makes gft.art special is that your recipients don’t need to have an Ethereum account to receive the NFT airdrop.

Teams often want to do cold airdrops but have a difficult time getting an Ethereum account address from each recipient. Gft.art allows you to airdrop without requiring addresses for each recipient. Via our Twitter integration you can enter a recent tweet from any Twitter account and instantly airdrop NFTs to users who have replied to the tweet. When that user logs in to gft.art with their Twitter account they have an easy way to claim their NFT.
